Company Overview

NNPC Retail Ltd. is a fully owned subsidiary of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) that operates in the Downstream Sector of the Nigerian oil and gas industry. As the nation’s leading petroleum products retailer, we work assiduously to ensure the safe and seamless supply of unadulterated petroleum products, making way for us to become the market leader. This position is associated with accuracy and safety of product dispensing, as well as our excellent customer service delivery. We sell and distribute our products via over 500 retail service stations (company owned and affiliate stations) spread across the country, including the coastal region. Our products presently include Premium Motor Spirit (Petrol), Automotive Gas Oil (Diesel), Dual Purpose Kerosene and Liquefied Petroleum Gas (Cooking Gas). Currently, the company is developing its own brand of lubricants and exploring Non-Fuel Revenue opportunities.

Corporate History

The story of NNPC Retail began when NNPC in 2000 disposed its 40% interest share capital in African Petroleum, Unipetrol and National Oil, resulting in the complete loss of its influence exercised in the retail segment of the Downstream Sector of the Oil and Gas industry. As a result, there was need for a strategic move to provide the Corporation with the following:

• A vehicle to ensure sustainable product availability for intervention in the market during periods of emergency and avoidable supply interruptions, A tool to benchmark the activities of key players in the distribution chain and ensure safe, orderly and profitable retailing of products in the country,
• Outlets for NNPC products in a deregulated environment on acceptable commercial terms,
• A means to achieve NNPC’s world-class vision by integrating its upstream and downstream businesses.

Based on these needs, the Corporation decided to establish its own Retail outlets in 2001 with the commissioning of Lagos and Abuja Mega Stations. On 22nd June 2009, NNPC Retail Limited was incorporated as a Private Liability Company with the objective of establishing retail outlets to market petroleum products to the Nigerian populace and to ensure the stability of product supply. Milestones Since 2000 NNPC Retail commenced operations with the commissioning of Lagos and Abuja Mega Stations in August and December 2002 respectively. Subsequently, approval for planned growth was granted and executed as follows:

Phase Year Number of Stations
Phase I 2002 2
Phase II 2003 2
Phase III 2004 7
Phase IV 2007 - 2008 12
Phase V 2008 - 2014 18
Phase VI 2015 - 2016 4
Phase VII 2017 2

Presently, NNPC Retail owns a station in each state of the Federation including the FCT. In addition, NNPC Retail has 12 Floating Mega stations introduced to serve the Riverine Communities of the Niger Delta area of the country. In early 2009, a decision was taken to expand NNPC Retail network through the Affiliation scheme. As a result of this drive, NNPC Retail market share has risen from 7% achieved in 2009 to about 13% as at first half of 2018.
